My philosophy is "Everything I ever needed to know about business I learned on the sports field." From Behind The Scoreboard, I feature the sports stories that tell us much more than simply who won or lost. These personal and inspiring experiences of grade school, high school, college, other amateur and even pro athletes allow all of us to reflect a little more on what is important in life. ~ James C. Metzger, Chairman and CEO, Whitmore — The Agency _______ Catching One Last Wave Though we see a few surfers and plenty of boogie borders on our beaches, we have yet to see anyone who can catch waves for thousands of people. But, Dan Fischer is not too far away up in Newport. The secluded ride on a board has embraced Dan for many years. His loneliness was altered a few years ago. When his father died, Dan added Karl’s name to his board. Then, when he lost his dog, he added Rudy’s name. Now, he casts his eyes over thousands of names etched on his surfboards as he rides Rhode Island's waves. His boards are covered with the names of people who have died, mostly from cancer, and who shared his love of the ocean. Dan created the One Last Wave Project this past January. He captures the healing power of the ocean to help people celebrate the lives of parents, siblings, partners, children and friends. Dan’s first two boards contain 3,500 names. He began adding names to a third board during the Memorial Day weekend. Learn more about Dan and his project in my blog. Maybe you would like to have him add a name to one of his boards in memory of someone you loved.
