You really can't blame the people either. Not all, but most people are introduced to religion when they are really too young to make the decision, and just go with it. Of the ones who fall into it as adults, there are many things built into their text (the Bible) which suggests not to be obedient to their church leaders is akin to not being obedient to Christ or God. Religion is a beautiful thing that has brought us some of the best artwork, music, architecture, literature and sculpting on the planet. It has brought solace and meaning to life to countless billions of souls. In my humble opinion, it is fundamentalism that is often dangerous. We see it from the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, we see it amongst the Puritans who left Europe to escape religious persecution. We see it amongst Muslim fundamentalists in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Siria... God is love. Period. Anyone who tells you any other message is speaking blasphemy.
