Anyone really good with Mac/Apple computers?

My roommate is letting me use his old MacBook Pro, but it’s so outdated that I can’t even get online with a browser that will let me do anything that I need to do. I tried to update the OS myself, but there aren’t any software updates listed as available, and I’m not skilled enough to successfully handle everything that I’m seeing on blogs about it — Happy to compensate someone for their expertise - I need to get an important project done and this has been a serious road block. My fingers are crossed that I hear from someone who can help I’d be so grateful.
