How to identify scammers/hackers?

Description

When I get emails from possible buyer's checking to see if my items are still available and want to purchase something, what should I look for if I believe they may be lying to me? I just got an email from a "Max Wells" wanting to buy/pickup my Lazy-Boy and asked for my phone number. Without really thinking I replied to him and gave out my number. I'm waiting to see if he asks for anything else. I tried searching for him. Idk if I can check if he has any past activity on Craigslist or not???
