Woodshop and Power Tool Safety

We are offering a regular class that certifies the student in unsupervised use of all tools in our woodshop, except for the CNC. This class will have two parts. The first will start at home with a 5-10 minute Woodshop Safety Basics slideshow watched before the class, followed by an open-book test on the material covered in the slideshow. Tests will be graded at the beginning of class openly and incorrect answers will be discussed and re-taught before moving on. The second part will include teacher instruction and student demonstration of safe use of five woodshop tools: band saw, circular saw, drill press, miter saw, and router. Students will first watch the instructor explain safe and effective use of a tool, then each student will demonstrate said use in front of the instructor and other students, with coaching from the instructor when needed. For consistency and ease of teaching, the instructor will have a standard rubric for each tool to teach and grade from. No prior experience required.
