Valentine, August 's Jazz Lounge will showcase Japanese jazz vocalist Kaoru Azuma and her Quintet featuring trombonist Scott Reeves. We have two dinner seatings upstairs with the concert: Doors open at 5pm first come first served 6pm (arrive by 5:30) and 8pm (arrive by 7:45) Please arrive promptly. For more information, call 914-488-4698 ***** Kaoru Azuma is an acclaimed international vocalist and educator. Based in Osaka, Japan, she performs frequently at leading jazz clubs in Tokyo, Kobe, Kyoto, and Osaka. She has also performed in renowned venues in New York City, at the French Quarter Jazz Festival in New Orleans, and was selected as a semifinalist for the 10th International Jazz Voices Competition in Klaipeda, Lithuania. Her work is documented on several recordings, including Footprints in New York, Travels, Wonderlands, and Faces. Kaoru is known for her tender interpretation of jazz standards and her ability to sing complex instrument jazz compositions. Jesse Forest is a versatile and in-demand guitarist currently performing at venues and festivalsthroughout Japan. His acclaimed album of original compositions and arrangements Lights Out was released in 2016 followed by a national tour and performances in the USA. Scott Reeves is a trombonist, alto flugelhornist, composer and educator. He has performed at many New York City venues including Birdland, the Village Vanguard, Smoke, the Iridium, Small’s, Dizzy’s, Sweet Rhythm, the 55 Bar, with groups such as the Dave Liebman Big Band, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Oliver Lake Big Band, and the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. He has also performed at leading jazz clubs in Rome, Lisbon, Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto. His work is documented on recordings with Liebman, as well as his own quintet, and the 17-piece Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra, featuring Steve Wilson. In addition to his performing and writing activities, Scott is Professor Emeritus at the City College of New York (CUNY) and previously was on the faculty at the Juilliard School of Music. Jazz pianist and composer, David Janeway, grew up in Detroit in the early sixties and was heavilyinfluenced by Motown and local jazz musicians such as Marcus Belgrave and Harold McKinney before moving to New York City in 1978. Janeway studied with the late Albert Dailey and performed with many Latin-Jazz and mainstream jazz artists during this period including The Supremes, Art Farmer, Angel Canales and Sabor, Michal Urbaniak, Jr. Cook, Sonny Fortune, Tom Harrell, Valery Ponomarev, Dakota Staton and many others. He recorded his first LP/CD as a leader, “Entry Point (New Direction, 1986), which featured Bob Berg, Marcus Belgrave, Steve Berrios and Lee Smith. In the early nineties he recorded “Inside Out “on Timeless Records (SJP 402), his second as a leader which featured Sonny Fortune and Billy Hart. His third “Excursion” (New Direction, 2004) features Janeway in a trio setting with Harvie S and Steve Davis.Janeway recorded, “Shadow Dances” with the Hastings Jazz Collective; a group he established in 2008that features Tim Armacost, Jay Azzolina, Harvie S and Ron Vincent. His most recent release, “Distant Voices” was released in October, 2021 on Steeplechase Records and features his working trio with Cameron Brown on bass and Billy Hart on drums.Janeway has performed extensively in the NYC club scene from the late 70s to the present both as aleader and sideman at Sweet Basil, Birdland, Visiones, Zanzibar, Jazz Forum, Maureen’s and Mezzrow aswell as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Madison Square Garden for the 1980 Salsa Festival, the Village Gate forthe Salsa Meets Jazz series and other clubs and venues throughout the US and Europe. Miles graduated from Oberlin Conservatory in 2020, where he studied with Tracy Rowell, PeterDominguez, and Gary Bartz. He is an experienced performer, teacher, and composer. So far he hasplayed many legendary stages including The Newport Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, Jazz Forum and Severance Hall.
