Embracing Life as Women focuses on women and the struggles of opioid use during pregnancy and beyond. Our goal is to bring awareness to the community by embracing, uplifting, motivating, and appreciating life as a woman, and those identifying as women, in today’s world, women who are faced with the challenges and the stigma around substance misuse and the profound reality of caring for an infant and child born with an addiction.
About ELAW
Embracing Life as Women brought in over 200 attendees and included keynote speaker Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child and DHHS Ambassador for the Office of Women’s Health and other amazing local inspirations, including Heather Engle and Dee Wirth. The community fair that took place after the conference brought 45 vendors and specialty groups to showcase and share the resources available in our community. In 2020 and 2021, we organized smaller, more intimate events due to COVID-19 restrictions. In 2020, we had around 40 attendees, a beautiful panel of women who shared their personal experiences, and our keynote speaker, Dr. Stephanie Woodard, Nevada DHHS, senior advisor on mental and behavioral health and the single state authority for substance abuse. 2021 brought us a robust panel of speakers including women who have cared for or fostered children born with addictive behaviors and doctors and nurses who have seen first-hand the need of women and children and what our community is capable of when we come together. Dr. Alejandro Leon provided an amazing demonstration of biofeedback methods and NICU Nurse Rosie Piacini gave us an eye opening presentation of infant trauma and infant massage. We are happy to be holding ELAW 2022 this year both in-person and virtually! The event is scheduled for August 11th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
