Description

Into the Sea is a service based nonprofit, bringing awareness to plastic pollution in the ocean. We are a community based organization focused on helping make the world around us a healthier, happier place. The event we would host with your group would be a Trash Audit Clean Up. A trash audit is a method for collecting data on waste, in this case trash found in the Austin environment. The goal is to determine what types and quantities of trash (Styrofoam, plastic film, aluminum, etc.) are found in a decided cleanup area. Into the Sea utilizes Keep Texas Beautiful's Texas Litter Database to contribute data. The data will then be used to raise awareness of what is found in our environment and by Texas scientists to help make a difference with the waste issues our community is facing. There are generally two ways to collect the data to answer your question regarding sorting - you could pick everything up and then sort and tally at the end, or you can take the tallies as you collect the trash. We suggest working in teams of 2-3 as well to divide up who makes the tallies, who picks up the trash and holds the bag. We will be providing cleanup materials, but would encourage those who own garden gloves and trash grabbers to bring their own. DIRECTIONS: Drive to the official sign of the park shown in an image below. Continue to the nearest parking lot just beyond. Once you have parked, walk straight toward Town Lake and you will see our group at three picnic benches, a tent, and our sign! We will be having an East Austin activist, Bertha Delgado Rendon speaking. She is founder and chairman at Save East Austin Schools Coalition, President at East Town Lake Citizen Neighborhood Association and involved in many more organizations in East Austin. She is currently running for Austin City Council District 3.
