Description
We are once again celebrating the current class of 2022 as the newest cohort becoming "MN, I Have a Dream" Scholars. In addition we will be honoring the current Bridge students with the inaugural "Andy Ford" Scholarship. This event welcomes current TRIO UB students and families, UB Alumni, Community Partners, Stakeholders and TRIO Supporters to join in celebration of student success. About: Andy Ford worked with TRIO Upward Bound for over 15 years as a math tutor and then as a videographer. Year after year he brought creativity, energy, and endless enthusiasm to the celebration video project. He was truly an exemplary human, and was instant friends with anyone he met. Andy passed away in 2021, this scholarship is for all the students completing the bridge program and going on to higher education who didn't have the opportunity to experience his warm and caring presence. The Minnesota “I Have a Dream” Scholarship began in 1989 when Bill Lahr and Karen Sternal approached TRIO Upward Bound directors, Bruce & Sharyn Schelske with the idea for a scholarship for TRIO Upward Bound students. When they approached the Schelske’s, they already knew the TRIO Upward Bound program at the University of Minnesota had been serving Minneapolis High Schools since 1966. The scholarship was designed to provide low income, first generation students, with extra educational opportunity for college enrollment and ultimately, college graduation. Students would be able to earn the scholarship while in TRIO Upward Bound, but would also have to maintain good performance while in college to maintain their scholarship. Bill Lahr’s vision was to not simply reduce the financial barriers to academic opportunity, but also motivate students and families to strive for academic success. We look forward to celebrating TRIO UB Scholars graduating from college, current scholars and the newest cohort, class of 2022.
