Help Needed on my 1st small block chevy build.

Im stuck and a little disabled and have no way anywhere and im trying to rebuild my first small block chevy 5.7 liter vortec engine in my front room an a engine stand. The problem is setting the end play. All i have is a claw hammer and no pieces of wood. I just recieved my bearings today and as far as tools go i do not have very many.I do not even have a tire iron. If anyone is familiar with building engines and has the time id sure appreciate some help with this.call Brian thanks
