BROOKLYN, NY — A 33-year-old died on Christmas morning after hitting a parked truck while cycling on Third Avenue, police said.
Alejandro Santos was riding an e-bike on Third Avenue near 24th Street just after midnight when he collided with an unoccupied Ford flat-bed truck, police said.
Santos fell into the road with trauma to his legs and internal injuries. He was taken to the hospital and died a few hours later, according to police.
Santos was less than two miles from home when he crashed.
The crash is the second time a cyclist has died on Third Avenue in two months. In October, a nurse was fatally hit by a motorcycle near 56th Street on the avenue while she was one her way home from an overnight shift.
Advocates have long pushed for safety improvements from the city on the thoroughfare. The corridor was recently among nine New York City streets where the speed limit was changed from 30 to 25 miles per hour in an effort to improve safety.
