Description

When describing the strictures to which Bourbon must adhere, the first requirement is that the mashbill be composed of a minimum of 51% corn, but the next most frequently referenced fact is that bourbon must be aged in new, charred American white oak casks. This does not need to be the end of the story for Bourbon, however. Once it has aged in this cask, for any amount of time, it can be called bourbon, and bourbon producers are free to play around with different types of casks. This process is often called "finishing," and it has, especially in recent years, become a powerful tool in the distiller's toolbox for distinguishing products. In this class, Evan Christie will lead an exploration of different cask finishes and explain how they affect the taste of Bourbon. Expect casks that previously held wines and other spirits, as well as different types and treatments of wood. You will learn about what makes each bourbon unique, as well as taste and discuss them with other bourbon aficionados. Join us for this cask-finished frenzy! Must be 21+ to attend.
