3 year old Black Lab

I have a 3 year old Black Lab that I took in from a friend who was in a domestic violence relationship. His names Boogie he’s very kind and loving upon taking him in it took some time for his to adapt to the new environment however he has lots of distrust towards men. He’ll bark and gets protective but doesn’t charge at them. I don’t have the knowledge to change this behavior therefore I believe it’s in his best interest that he go to a females home who can work with him.
