Overview Do you want to learn how to consistently win more arguments with your parents? Or, how to speak clearly and confidently in class discussions? Do you want to develop useful skills for future interviews? The Find Your Voice: Public Speaking and Debate Workshop provides the perfect opportunity for female and gender-expansive youth to hone these skills. Throughout this four-day workshop, you will: Participate in engaging activities, including impromptu speaking games and mock debatesLearn how to effectively communicate your ideas in different settingsGain confidence when public speakingDiscover successful body language tactics to enhance your speaking presenceLearn the composition of a persuasive argumentCombine these skills to deliver a presentation to the classDevelop tactics for navigating thought-provoking, difficult topics and advocating for your ideasThis workshop is geared toward female and gender-expansive youth in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who want to learn how to advocate for themselves and speak effectively about pressing topics. This program will provide a safe space for students to speak freely and gain confidence and will equip students with vital public speaking experience. Public speaking appears in many forms such as reading aloud during class, collaborating with peers on a project, and communicating effectively in an interview. This workshop was designed to help young students, specifically female and gender-expansive youth, develop these essential speaking skills and confidence in their ideas and abilities. No formal prior experience is necessary for this workshop. The curriculum will accommodate a variety of skill levels. Logistics All sessions will be held in person at 1844B Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA 02420. This workshop will consist of separate programs for students in 5th and 6th grade and students in 7th and 8th grade. Students in 5th and 6th grade: 9-10 am on August 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Students in 7th and 8th grade: 10:30-11:30 am on August 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th. This workshop is free to students. For those who wish to support an organization whose mission aligns with the workshop’s values, an option is offered to make a donation to Girls’ Voices. “Girls’ Voices supports young women to use media creation as a catalyst for positive change in communities around the world. Girls’ Voices provides targeted scholarship funding to support girls who face obstacles to their education.” For additional information about this organization, please visit https://greatergood.org/girls-voices?hsLang=en#. While there is a suggested donation amount, monetary donations will not affect acceptance to this program. The suggested donation amount is $20, but any monetary contributions are welcomed and appreciated. More information will be provided following registration. Her favorite school subjects are science and history, and she also plays field hockey and partakes in her school’s choir. She has participated in her school’s speech and debate program for the past four years and has competed in numerous public speaking and debate tournaments. In the fall, she will represent her school at the International Independent Schools’ Public Speaking Competition with other students from around the world. Additionally, she has experience tutoring and mentoring young students from the public speaking and debate workshop run virtually last summer. Caroline attends an all-girls school and feels strongly about providing female and gender-expansive youth with the opportunity to express themselves and develop their public speaking skills. She created this workshop for young students to gain confidence in presentations, interviews, and any future public speaking endeavors.
