Description

Created in 1972, the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of many separate parcels of bay and marshlands on both sides of San Francisco Bay. The wildlife refuge provides critical habitat for many species of plants and birds. Our walk is in the area just south of the Dumbarton Bridge. Millions of birds fly through the refuge during peak migration in the fall and winter. We will follow the Tidelands Trail and the Newark Slough Trail for an easy loop of approximately 2 miles to view the fauna and flora, including birds that have decided to hang around for summer. Notes Wear comfortable walking shoes and a sunhat, and bring binoculars, water, snacks, and walking poles if needed. Bring your lunch if you would like to eat at the refuge after the walk. Photo: Suzanne Weakley About the LeaderSuzanne Weakley has been leading Greenbelt Alliance outings since 2012. She was born in San Francisco, but nature runs in her blood. Her parents met on a Sierra Club pack trip in Kings Canyon National Park in the 1940's, and she grew up hiking and horseback riding on a ranch in Sonoma County. She works in continuing legal education (CEB) for the University of California.
