This is a FREE community event called Swim-In for Joy to commemorate our Fort Lauderdale Swim-In for Restorative Justice that took place in July 2020. This year we are celebrating this event with the Grand Opening Of LA Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center Swimming Pool at 1409 NW 6th St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311. This event will provide a collective experience for healing, awareness, and joy through the water and is presented by Diversity in Aquatics, CPR Etc., Black Cat Media, and Swims Foundation. There will be both out-of-water and in-water activities. The morning starts with a program that includes blue-mindfulness and speakers from our community. Our speakers include: Terri Hankerson, Representative of one of Broward’s Pioneer FamiliesLt. Ken Roland, CEO of CPR Etc., Inc and Chairman of the Board for Diversity in Aquatics Inc. Filmmaker Cathleen Dean, Producer of “Wade in the Water: Drowning in Racism”Thaddeus Gamory, Diversity in Aquatics, Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships.Proposed Program for Riverland Park Pool 8:30 am - 9:00am: Participant Arrival & Networking9:00 am - 9:45 am: Speakers, Blue-Mindfulness and Community Engagement9:45 am - 10:00 am: Mindfulness practice in the pool and out of the pool10:15 am - 10:30 am: Film Wade In the Water Viewing10:30 am - 10:50 am: Community Healing Circle11:00 am - 12:00 am: Blue Mindfulness Exercise, Water Safety Event & Swim lessons for the community12:00 closing and thank you This commemoration also falls on the weekend of united Nations World Drowning Prevention Day. The goal of the event is to provide a positive environment for all to build a relationship with the water and its benefits through mindfulness, water, and community. This FREE event will provide opportunities for the community to heal, share the rich history of Black people in aquatics and to address water safety and the aquatic needs of the community. Covid Participation Guidelines Diversity In Aquatics will adhere to practicing safe and healthy event. Please make sure to stay home if you have tested positive for COVID-19, are waiting for COVID-19 test results, have COVID-19 symptoms, or if you have had close contact with a person who has tested positive for or who has symptoms of COVID-19 Attendees upon arrival should stay at least 6 feet away from people who don’t live with them We encourage all attendees ahead of the event to bring and use masks at the event. We will provide staff and attendees who do not bring their own masks at the event.
