***NOTE*** To be considered for this position, please apply at the Skagit County Job Opportunity site: SUMMARY: As assigned, performs duties of Purser and Deckhand for the County Ferry that transports passengers, vehicles, goods and services to and from Guemes Island. This position is called upon to fill shifts that become available after the employee work schedule has been posted and cannot be filled by regular part-time and part-time employees. This classification has no guarantee of hours. Although this classification has no guarantee of hours, On-Call Purser/Deckhands will be called upon to fill in for day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays; may work up to 176 hours per month if available. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Open and close gates, secure vessel at loading dock, raise and lower bridges and ramps, control and direct vehicles and passengers on and off the ferry. Minimum 2 years experience on vessels of similar tonnage is preferred. Check oil and coolant levels in main engines and generator. Assist mechanic or shift supervisor in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical systems. Ability to perform Crew drills as required per Coast Guard regulations. Sell tickets and collect fare for passage of passengers and vehicles using the Ferry. Daily reconciliation of tickets sold and cash received. Make daily deposits; keep coast guard counts of vehicles and passengers. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: General maintenance on the vessel and at the terminals. This includes emptying trash receptacles, cleaning bathroom facilities, cleaning parking areas and painting. Answers phone in office and provide information in a courteous and helpful manner to the public about Ferry service. Performs other duties as may be assigned. ***NOTE*** To be considered for this position, please apply at the Skagit County Job Opportunity site: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Passenger and vehicle ferry experience preferred or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the skills, knowledge, and ability necessary to perform the work. Requires the knowledge of: - Knowledge of safety hazard procedures and safety standards for passenger carrying vessels and related facilities. - General knowledge of marine mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems used on vessels of similar tonnage. Requires the ability to: - Ability to operate mechanical equipment and perform preventive or minor maintenance. - Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. - Ability to communicate courteously and clearly with the public and crew. - Ability to work accurately with numbers and money. - Basic seamanship skills such as knot tying and line handling. Licenses and/or Certifications: - Valid Washington State Driver's License. - Valid First Aid and CPR certification. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires ability to stand and walk on shipboard in rough seas, occasional crawling or climbing. Physical effort may be required to lift equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Good hand-eye coordination required. Physical health, vision, and hearing must meet Coast Guard standards. Hazards: Work is performed while standing in the wheelhouse or walking on a Ferry deck in all types of weather and water conditions. Work requires exposure to gas and diesel fumes, potentially hazardous materials, high noise levels, and mechanical equipment. Occasionally work may be performed in small, confined spaces or at heights up to 45 feet.
