Four Residents Displaced In Three-Alarm Fire On Franklin Avenue

Press release from the City of New Orleans: December 25, 2020 On Friday December 25, 2020 at 1:42 am, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received multiple 911 calls of an abandoned apartment complex on fire located at 2230-2232 Franklin Avenue. The first-up fire companies immediately called for a Second Alarm upon arrival at 1:47 am. An abandoned two-story apartment complex was heavily involved in flames and began to spread to an occupied two-story duplex next door on the right side located at 2238 Franklin Avenue. One person lived downstairs at 2238-1 and three people lived upstairs at 2238-2 Franklin Avenue. All residents were able to escape without any injuries. As firefighters created a water curtain between both structures to reduce damage to the occupied duplex at 2238 Franklin, a live power line snapped falling onto and apparatus causing a firefighter to jump front the top of his apparatus onto the median. The firefighter was not injured, and a Third Alarm was called for at 1:49 am. The abandoned complex at 2230-2232 Franklin contained four units and was destroyed with the center and rear collapsing.The duplex apartment located at 2238 Franklin sustained fire and water damage to the attic and at the rear of the building. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to any other exposed properties. The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist the four displaced residents with housing vouchers, food, clothing, and information for longer term assistance needs. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS), the Louisiana State Fire Marshal, Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Entergy, the American Red Cross and the Office of Code Enforcement all assisted in the mitigation of this incident.
