Press release from the City of Des Moines:
December 28, 2020
DES MOINES, IOWA – Monday, December 28, 2020 – The Des Moines Public Works Department is geared up and ready to keep Des Moines moving as a large snowstorm moves towards Iowa.
"This storm looks like it will impact travel starting Tuesday afternoon," Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said. "Our full crews are ready to go to clear our city streets."
The Public Works Department did not spread brine prior to this storm because of they spread 450 tons of salt to address Sunday's wintery mix.
"That salt is still on the ground, so we expect the first round of snow to melt on contact," Gano said. "But we are still expecting a lot of treacherous road conditions, so stay home and stay off the roads if you can."
The snow is predicted to be followed by ice that which would make for challenging conditions for Public Works crews as they try to keep city streets clear.
"We're hoping we can get it cleared as quickly as possible, but there will be some residual snowpack on neighborhood streets," Gano said.
Des Moines residents can track plowing progress and stay prepared for winter weather all season long at DMSnow.org or by following DSM Public Works on Twitter and Des Moines Public Works on Facebook.
