The overturning of Roe vs. Wade is about more than taking away access to abortion. This ruling fundamentally questions the ontological status of women as autonomous human beings who are equal to men...it questions women as experts on our own lives and in control of our own destiny. This ruling sends a message that women are valued only for our ability to bear children. Concurrent to this ruling is a broader political context in which the social services infrastructure to support families (i.e., comprehensive healthcare, high-quality affordable childcare, wage equity, etc.) has all but disappeared. We are living in a time of purity....the social-political-cultural climate in the United States is demanding chastity, virginity, heterosexuality, monogamy, and misogyny. So let's fight back in a way they don't see coming...we are co-opting the purity ball and repurposing this patriarchal ceremony to advance reproductive and gender justice. This event is for anyone who wants equity....all the genders, all the sexualities, all the skin-colors and so on...it doesn't matter...if you are on board with this fight for reproductive justice and equity for all, then join us on August 21!
