After pouring his life's savings from working in the service industry for decades, Mario, opened up a mexican seafood restaurant in December of 2019. None of us knew what was to come. As we all know too well, the pandemic continues to have devastating effects on our communities. My dad's business is one of many small immigrant owned business that continue to struggle through the pandemic -many of which didn't make it. During the height of the pandemic my dad's struggling businesses not only affected his ability to pay rent for the restaurant but also for his home. Programs that targeted small businesses were used up quickly by corporations and many excluded immigrants from applying. Mario faced harassment and neglect from his landlord because of his inability to pay rent and in March of 2022 his landlord filed an eviction case against him. Luckily his case was dismissed; however, he still owes thousands of dollars in back rent. The rental assistance program he solicited funds for has not gotten back to him despite the state's commitment to fund applicants who submitted applications before the deadline. So now, we are asking that our community come and support him in raising funds for his rent. Join us for a fundraiser over music and delicious mariscos Mario will be preparing himself!
