Description

Join archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network and the University of South Florida on a kayak tour to a local archaeological site! Learn about local archaeology and the environment around Weedon Island with this immersive program. Participants will join archaeologists and kayak guides on a kayak tour through estuary waters and around mangrove islands. We will stop at a local archaeological site for an on-site tour. Along the way there will be stops to discuss how people have lived in Tampa Bay for thousands of years along with information on local wildlife and ecosystems we will encounter. All attendees will be provided a spot on a single or tandem kayak by ECOmersion. No personal watercraft are permitted on this tour. Because of the Florida heat during this time of year, attendees are asked to bring lots of water and snacks, appropriate clothing for being on the water, sun protection in the form of a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and insect repellant. The site we are stopping at will have shade but is a mangrove island that will require some dexterity to traverse. Please contact us with any questions about the tour, physical requirements, or what to bring. The tour will leave from Weedon Island Preserve at the kayak launch next to the fishing pier. Due to the nature of this trip, individuals must be at least 18 years of age to participate and previous paddling experience is recommended. This event is in coordination with the Florida Public Archaeology Network, the University of South Florida, the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society, and ECOmersion. Spots are limited on this program so cancellation/refund requests will be accepted up to 48 hours before the tour start time.
