Detroit Future City invites you to “HASTINGS STREET: Looking Back to Bring Forward,” a symposium in collaboration with Plowshares Theatre Company, Michigan's leading black theater. The symposium will discuss the razing of Black Bottom and how that action has impacted issues of development and equity today. When: Thursday, July 14 at 4 p.m. Where: The Eastern Market Shed #5 The panelists include: • Ken Coleman, Michigan Advance Local Historian & Reporter, who will lay out the historical context of the demolition of a community. • P.G. Watkins, Black Bottom Archives Archivist, who will discuss the importance of capturing the stories of the residents. • Ashley Clark, Detroit Future City Vice President, who will using data from the 2021 DFC Economic Equity Report to give a lay of the land • Chase Cantrell, Build Community Value Executive Director, who will discuss the current condition of development in Detroit. There will also be a 20–25-minute Q & A session following the panelists presentations. HASTINGS STREET is a world premiere musical by Plowshares Theatre Company that is set on the cusp of change in Detroit. Home to Black stories, Plowshares Theatre Company supports Black artists & audiences with great plays, including HASTINGS STREET--which explores the lives of Detroiters at a moment when the city was rewriting the lives and landscape of thousands of African Americans in the name of progress.
