Inspired by the myth of Icarus, O poor distracted world! is a meditation on lamentation that brings together works from the Renaissance and Early Baroque whose stories probe the intersection(s) of complacency, hubris, and fate – of both the dying and those left behind.
Featuring a stellar team of six singers, along with lute and continuo organ, the program will highlight individual talents through solo, small group, and full ensemble works. Light refreshments will accompany the performance.
Drawing its name from the aesthetic philosophy of the Baroque known as the Doctrine of the Affections (Affektenlehre), Ensemble Affekten is Chicagoland’s newest ensemble dedicated to the intimate-scale vocal works of the Middle Ages through the Baroque. Through narrative programs that recontextualize the ways that early composers married text and music to arouse emotions in their audiences, we are committed to making this rich body of works relevant to the world in which we are living – through rhetoric, storytelling, and style.
