ISO snake or reptile for beginner

I'm looking for a snake or lizard that would be a good fit for someone without a lot of experience. My veteran fiance has been talking for a while about getting into either snakes or reptiles as a hobby to occupy him as he isn't employed outside our home now, and I'd like to surprise him. It would be adult owned and well cared for. He has minimal past experience so we'd like to start with something somewhat simple until he has more experience under his belt. Any suggestions would be welcome as well! We're doing tons of research but would love to hear directly from people with experience.
