8-Week Series Class dates: 8/8, 8/15, 8/22, 8/29, 9/12, 9/17, 9/26, 10/3 *no class on Memorial Day 9/5 Brief lectures in the beginning of class will touch on the history of clay as a fine art medium, contemporary ceramics, and the skills we will be building to make our own work. Students will learn how to manipulate clay on the potter’s wheel to create functional, unique and personal pieces. We will focus on learning basic forms such as cups, bowls, mugs, and plates. Additionally, at the end of the course, students will learn how to embellish their pieces using slips and high fire glazes. This class is for students with no prior wheel experience, all are welcome. Class size will be limited. Course fee includes 25# clay and bisque, glaze firing fees are additional. The first class is Throwing 100 and is mandatory! We will introduce students to the Launch Space ceramics department. This class will cover the fundamentals of ceramics and provide a walkthrough of the space. There will be a demonstration of cleaning procedures and tool use. The following topics will be discussed- clay and clay bodies, cones and firings, the production process and our shelving systems, glaze storage, tools, proper cleanup. After this first class- students will be cleared to use the ceramics space and the pottery wheels at Launch Space. 8 week course: Week 1: Throwing 100 class- introduction to clay- cleaning the studio- safety in the studio and with equipment and tools- Week 2: First class of 101- Introduction and Example shown: Basics- cutting clay, wedging clay, setting up the wheel, centering clay, raising to a cylinder shape. Then work individually. Week 3: Example shown: Centering clay- cylinder shape- changing shapes. Then work individually. Week 4: Example Shown: How to trim pots. Work individually. Week 5: Example shown: How to pull handles, how to attach handles- different types of handles. Work individually. Week 6: Last day to throw a new piece on the wheel- work on completing previous work- smooth things out. Week 7: Complete all projects. Make sure all work is signed. Week 8: Final class!
