Description

Carter's Log Inn. We all have our memories of the food and fun that took place there through the decades. In the spring of 2021. Word came to the Potlatch Historical Society that the Carter's Log Inn sign was in danger of being lost to repurposing. Tom Carter, descendant, came riding in on his white horse and was the ringleader in coordinating with Avista's planned outage (the sign was mere inches from live power lines) and Sign Crafters of Lewiston (to work on a cold and windy Sunday). PHS was given a nice donation to cover the moving costs by one very nice guy and Atlas Sand & Rock, Wayne Gallagher, the local American Legion and the City of Potlatch all played parts in making the move, just yards away, to a resting spot in the shade of a small park right at the edge of the log cabin parking lot. Since that day. the Potlatch Historical Society has gotten donations of approximately $5700 for this project, which went towards the deposit of having one side of the sign restored. Once all the neon, the transformers, wiring and paint is replaced the vision is to light the sign each night. This will make for a great evening destination. PHS will install signage regarding the Carter Family/Log Inn history as well as the history of the city of Potlatch park. Installing a bench and grooming the park are also on the to-do list. And why just one side? As a reminder: when we don't care for our relics, our city attributes, they fade away and can be lost. Often times forgotten except in the memories of those who eventually pass on. PHS has committed to gathering donations to cover the second payment of $5700 for the potential bill of $11,750. We are searching for donations and grants to keep this project on task. Every bit helps. Thank you!
