LA GRANGE, IL — A La Grange man threatened to get into a shooting match with police officers after they responded to a domestic disturbance earlier this month at his apartment, police said. Sonny James Hayes, 39, was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and obstructing police. La Grange Patch obtained the police report through a public records request. About 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9, officers from La Grange and La Grange Park showed up at Hayes' apartment in the 10 block of South Spring Avenue. No one answered the door when police knocked, so when one of the officers found the door unlocked, he opened it, the report said. Hayes and a woman appeared from the back bedroom, with Hayes saying, "What are you doing inside my apartment?" Officers explained they were doing a well-being check. Hayes said he was fine and that he needed no help from the police. He looked at an officer's holster and asked the officer whether he thought he had a gun. Hayes then stripped off his jeans, now completely naked, police said. "What if I go get a pistol and we go back and forth and see who is standing at the end?" Hayes said, according to the report. In response to the threat, an officer asked Hayes to put his hands behind his back. Hayes ran back inside his apartment and barricaded himself, police said. The officers left the building, where the woman told the officers that Hayes had choked her and that she hit him back. But she said she was fine and needed no help. She also said Hayes would go to sleep and be better later. Hayes later called La Grange's 911 and threatened to "stab anyone (police) in the neck who comes into this apartment," according to the police report. He also said police violated his civil rights. Hayes was arrested four days later after he submitted to an interview at the police station, the report said.
