She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge and Skills Assessed (CPDT-KSA) and a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) and a Operation Socialization Certified Trainer (OSCT). Helen has been training dogs for more than 19 years. She is a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, a member of the Association of Animal Behavior Professionals and is a certified member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and a member of the Pet Professional Guild. Helen is uniquely qualified to talk about providing hospice care to senior dogs. After having fostered senior dogs throughout the years, Helen founded the nonprofit Old Dogs Go to Helen, a senior and hospice rescue. Helen takes senior dogs and others with serious health issues into her home, and provides them with love and care until they pass. If you’ve ever wondered how to do this work, this is the presentation for you. The presentation will focus on providing hospice and palliative care: what to expect, how to introduce new dogs to resident dogs, how to know when to say goodbye, the types of goodbye, and how to talk to children about the issues that arise. Helen is also uniquely qualified to address the common difficulties involved in having young children and dogs. A mother of two young girls, Helen has many dogs of her own in addition to bringing dogs into her home through Old Dogs Go to Helen. Helen is a licensed Dogs and Storks presenter and a licensed Dogs and Toddlers presenter through Family Paws, an organization that provides resources for families with dogs and children, and educates dog trainers on supporting dog-owning families with babies and toddlers. She will address common problem areas with dogs and children, present case studies of families and dogs, discuss developmental milestones of children and dogs that should be considered by families, as well as environmental considerations involved in managing dogs and children as well as possible. Helen’s talk on hospice care will run from 10 a.m. to noon. The dogs and kids presentation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
