Description
Note the change in date from June 30, 2022 to August 11, 2022! A one day workshop that focuses on the progress of a USFS grant to develop a working concept of making residential sized CLT panels for homes. About this event-A one day workshop that opens doors at 8:30 am for sign ins and to enjoy coffee, donuts and fruit. This morning workshop covers the progress of a US Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center sponsored project to develop the concept of using Southern yellow pine dimensional lumber to make small cross laminated timber panels suitable for residential homes. The process involves taking standard #2 grade Southern yellow pine lumber dried to 19% moisture content, redry to 12%, plane each face down 1/16" to 1-3/8" thickness, then press in a hydraulic press. The panels are 4-1/8" thick x 48" wide x 96" tall and are assembled with wood screws on a residential home site. A hydraulic press from our past NC furniture industry presses a batch of ten CLT panels. Panels are then trimmed to 4x8' and an edge groove is sawn out for a wooden spline for assembly. Our economic analysis shows this method to be able to construct a 1,000 sf home in two days on site using wooden screws and splines. These panels are for roofs, walls and floors and are able to span eight feet between rafters and joists. This project is supported by a large number of industry companies, include sawmills, adhesive manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and dealers, wood products manufacturing firms, home designers and testing firms. We will accommodate attendees for mobility needs to the best of our abilities. North Carolina State University, the US Forest Service, the Wood Education and Resource Center of Princeton, WV does not discriminate against any groups or individuals for any reason. The Wood Education and Resource Center of Princeton, WV manages the Wood Innovations Grant program and this grant was awarded in 2018.
