Description
Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodcraft. This is a more advanced class - Taking the intro to Kumiko will be quite helpful for participants. Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodcraft of creating intricate latticework with patterns all made by hand. We will discuss the basic tools and jigs needed to make the hexagonal jigumi with the mitsukude joint. Taking the introduction to kumiko will be quite helpful for participants. Tools You'll be Using (feel free to bring your own, but we will provide the tools you need as well) ● Kumiko planing jigs (provided for class - and available for purchase) ● A 60 degree kumiko cutting jig (provided for class - and available for purchase) ● Dozuki - a Japanese drawcut saw with very fine tooth set (0.2mm) or fine dovetail saw ● Steel Metric Ruler in mm ● Kanna - a Japanese plane or a small block plane ● 1⁄8” (3mm) chisel ● Small square ● Marking knife ● Marking gauge ● Sliding bevel gauge Approximate class timeline: 30min introductions and overview of hexagonal kumiko including examples of several kumiko patterns 15min brief discussion of tools and usage 15min brief overview of kumiko and components of mitsukude joint How to measure jigumi Sizing kumiko strips60min cutting the Type-A joint Marking the kumikoUsing the cutting jig - cut first half lap Realign, mark and cut center of joint45min cutting the Type-B joint Cut first lap joint and remove wasteFlip strip, mark and cut second joint15min Assemble the jigumi Create diamond Cut and fill center joints60minContinued work on jigumi - make second one Create kumiko infill pieces for a patternThroughout the class, I will be working with students on techniques and understanding the process. About the Instructor: Vince Cook is the owner/builder/designer of WilliamSon Custom Furniture and Chops Finely. He works out of his studio in Brainerd, creating fine furniture, cabinetry and handcrafted kitchenware. Building on a life-long woodworking hobby and drawing inspiration from classwork at North Benett Street School in Boston, he builds custom pieces that reflect the beauty in natural wood, craftsmanship and creative design.
