Description

On Saturday July 16th, Raul Mejia will be debuting his first solo show. One of three siblings born in Mexico City, he was only 8 months old when his mother first carried him to the United States. Now a citizen, he coexists between American and Mexican culture. He began his artistic journey as a street artist and brought those roots into the Sacramento art scene to ultimately create a well-recognized, distinctive style with simple lines yet complex subjects. His keen sense of design lends itself to a continually fresh and individualistic aesthetic. Mejia’s art is non-traditional and perfectly bridges the dual elements of his Mexican- American culture. This gallery show is inspired by the life of Frida Khalo and the influence she has had on his personal growth. He uses innate metaphorical and spiritual elements to captivate curiosity, distill beauty and provoke thought. A reminder of life, death and all the beauty that exists in-between in the here and now. In an effort to be sustainable, most of Mejia’s art is painted on recycled wood panel boards; his canvas paintings utilize frames built from repurposed wood. He aims to create beautiful artwork without adding to the ever-growing problem of pollution and production waste. All are welcome to this Atrium Gallery event which will be held in an indoor/outdoor setting with our floor-to-ceiling french doors which open to the patio.
