Description

On May 4, President Biden announced that for the first time in over 50 years, the White House will be hosting a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health. According to the White House, the conference, and the preparatory work leading up to it, will accelerate progress and drive significant change to end hunger, improve nutrition and physical activity, reduce diet-related disease, and close the disparities around them. Prior to the conference, the White House has put out a request for partner-led convenings in order to gather ideas that reflect a wide range of stakeholder views. The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement, along with several partner organizations, has agreed to convene a session in order to gather ideas from diverse and forward-thinking groups in Iowa. Our conference will highlight recent efforts to learn from the first-person experiences of Iowans and will build off ideas from recent Harkin on Wellness Symposiums, as well as opening up discussions for participants to offer suggestions and reflections that can be incorporated into our report for the White House Conference. We invite Iowans who care about hunger, nutrition, and health to join us for this discussion on July 11th, in-person or virtually. Our discussion will have a morning session focused on the first-person experiences of Iowans and an afternoon session expanding on themes from previous Harkin on Wellness Symposiums, and we encourage participants to join us for one or both sessions.
