Description

Given our hormones, we are better endurance animals than explosive workhorses. When I look at most events (including Team USA Paracycling events), offering a shorter course for women (which means it would be a more intense effort) is counterintuitive and doesn't make sense to me. Thus, I want to lead by example, empower more women to work with their bodies and increase participation in longer-distance events such as gravel races + backpacking. Thus, an event I am hosting along with Chelsea McBride from GirlzGoneRiding, and Cynthia (Chi) Planken from Outdoor Fitness Coach! This would be in part with PEARL iZUMi, and they are launching a women's campaign, WE. WE is a movement to build community and an acknowledgment that we’re stronger together. It’s a call to take cycling in a new direction where women feel empowered at every level of the sport. By creating a hub that brings together groups and individuals working alone, we can harness that collective energy and work toward a shared vision. By building community, we can create a sport where strength in numbers is more significant than strength in watts, where Women Empower Women Empower Women… Chelsea McBride from GirlzGoneRiding Chelsea has done lots of sports but now mostly mountain bikes and does 8-12 hour adventure races with other rad women. Empowering Women is in all facets of her life: working in software engineering and advocating for more women in STEM; advocating for women in leadership through workshops provided by the Women Empowering Women in Leadership (WEWIL) organization; and last but not least, and especially applicable to this event, getting more women into mountain biking through the volunteer organization Girlz Gone Riding (GGR), which organizes MTB rides that lead to increased confidence and exposure to trails that San Diego and the greater SoCal area has to offer. Cynthia (Chi) Planken from Outdoor Fitness Coach I have a passion for TRAINING, and specifically into the body’s ability to adapt and change to push new limits. This passion led me to my education at Pepperdine University where I received a degree in Sports Medicine and a master’s in Education. As my passion for learning grew with numerous health and fitness related certifications (including USA Cycling Coach (level 2) and Skills Coach), my love for riding and the outdoors grew alongside to include triathlons, cross-country racing, bike packing, backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, adventure racing, enduro racing and most recently, gravel riding/racing. I’m here to show you how to make the most of your training - you’ll get faster, feel stronger and won’t be beaten up at the end of the day so you CAN enjoy time with your family, do even more in your career, and WIN at the race of life. Let’s do this! Join us by signing up! HEAR THE STORIES Sharing stories often leads to uncovering common ground. As part of our mission to expand the cycling community, we’re sharing stories of shared connections from a host of women riders. While each story offers the unique perspective of one individual, we hope you find a few kernels of universal truth that resonate with you.
