True Freedom Logline
After his father leaves the family, a black kid grows up to build a time machine to save his mom, but when he ends up in the year 1860, the real insight begins when he brings a slave to the year 2014.
July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month. Team Freedom Outreach is an all-volunteer organization of Christian men whose purpose is to visit and mentor kids between the ages of 12 and 17 in Juvenile Detention Centers.
Approximately 85% of kids in detention centers do not have a man living in their household. "At Risk Youth" suffer from abandonment issues that they don't talk about. One of the biggest problems is that they don't talk about it.
"True Freedom" is a short film that will be distributed to mentor/mentee programs to help bring awareness to abandonment issues. Mentoring programs can show the film to their mentees and afterwards discuss the 5 stages of abandonment S.W.I.R.L which stands for Shattering, Withdrawal, Internalizing, Rage, and Lifting. (As referenced by Susan Anderson a psychotherapist with 30 years' experience in studying the subject of abandonment).
The goal of the film is to bring mental health awareness to abandonment issues and spark engaging conversations so that healing can begin.
Ambassador Andrew Young, UN Ambassador under Jimmy Carter, as well as former NFL running back Warrick Dunn donated to the film by playing the roles of a mentor and a counselor, respectively.
