Job Description: Music Director, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem (UUCS) is a religious home for those who seek a religious community that will accept and honor you as you are. UUCS is seeking a Music Director to plan and cultivate a vibrant and inspirational congregational music program, which aligns with the congregation’s mission, embodies its values, and furthers its visionary ends. Description: The Music Director reports directly to the senior minister. The Music Director’s primary role is to provide inspiring, diverse, multi-cultural and theme-enhancing choral and instrumental music for the Sunday worship experience. They are charged with nurturing the presence of music throughout all areas of congregational life. Specific duties. Directing the adult choir in rehearsal on Thursday evening, Sunday morning worship service, Christmas Eve service and other special events; planning music-related liturgy in collaboration with the senior minister and other worship leaders and organizing the leading hymns on Sunday. In addition, they will supervise and set expectations for the performance of the pianist, and manage the operational aspects of the music program, including the music budget, payment of guest musicians, ordering music, copyright compliance, and instrument maintenance. They are also expected to participate in the UU Musicians Network and actively attend congregational meetings as directed by the minister. Desired Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent work experience, including demonstrated success in leading a music program in a congregational, educational, or equivalent setting, choral/vocal conducting, working effectively as part of a team with volunteers, and program administration. Core competencies should include an understanding of the value of music in worship and spiritual growth, technically skilled musicianship, trustworthiness and reliability, collaborative and empathic interpersonal skills, organizational and management skills, creativity and openness to new ideas.
