Join us for an in-depth introduction to off-camera flash and lighting in this workshop with Seattle portrait photographer, Kate Hailey. Working with off-camera light is easier than you might realize! Kate's approach is to share techniques without overwhelming you with technical jargon. As residents in the PNW, having this skillset in your bag will help you create awesome portraits year round, no matter the drizzle happening outside. During this hands-on workshop, Kate will review essential lighting concepts that you may have heard of like Rembrandt, beauty/clamshell, high key, low key, hair light, and more. With each setup, she will discuss how the gear works, why placement of light is key to achieving a specific mood, or telling a story in a certain way. Attendees will learn: Understanding of lighting terminology Lighting setups & placementModifiers, what they are and why need themOverview of the gear Working with talent, including posing techniquesAdding creative tools like gels and gridsIntroduction to color theoryAttendees will leave the session with great tools for creating great photos for their family, friends, and clients! Experience Level Photography: Beginner to Advanced Attendees should have a working knowledge of their cameras buttons, menus, and dials. Including how to change ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, flash settings, live view and silent shutter modes (if applicable). Experience Level Lighting: Beginner No lighting experience is required for this session, it will be a great primer for individuals interested in getting started with off-camera light or wanting to refresh their lighting skills. WHAT TO BRINGCamera with a hot shoe, please make sure your firmware is updatedA lens in the 50 - 105mm range, 35 - 85 on crop sensor cameras. Kate’s fave lenses for portraits are the 50mm and 85mm focal lengths. Fully charged battery Memory Card(s)Notebook for taking notesQuestions!WHERE TO MEETThis workshop will primarily take place inside Glazer's classroom, on the 2nd floor, for a portion of the session the group will head outside to also explore balancing off-camera flash with available light.
