Description

Giving Black® RVA celebrates Black Philanthropy Month 2022! We are back in person for the 4th annual celebration highlighting local Black philanthropists and celebrating their rich giving history that generously impacts the whole community. Each year, we aim to inform, involve, inspire and invest in Black philanthropic leadership to strengthen African American and African-descent giving in all its forms for the global benefit of our communities, our organizations and our lives. This year’s celebration theme is The Fierce Urgency of Now: From Dream to Action. We will honor several Black philanthropic leaders in the region, be inspired by local philanthropists, and learn about the impact of collective giving — and all who attend will learn ways they too can advance ongoing funding and racial equity in Black communities worldwide! Some of our features this year includes: ֍ Mikki Spencer, former radio host, community activist and philanthropist as our moderator! ֍ Special recognition of local Black philanthropic leaders with the Legacy & Ingenuity Awards! ֍ An in-depth panel discussion with leaders of Black giving circles on the impact of collective giving! ֍ Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, founder and creator of Black Philanthropy Month, as our keynote speaker! ...and you will NOT want to miss this: Arrive early to view the astounding exhibition and moving tribute of "Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy," a series of evocative images and incisive narratives that explore the African American philanthropy experience and the roots of giving traditions. We look forward to you joining us! Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), observed every August, is a global celebration and concerted campaign to elevate African-descent giving. Created by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women's Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet), BPM launched in 2011 to commemorate the United Nations Year and Decade of People of African Descent. In 2019, the Community Foundation partnered with SisterFund and Ujima Legacy Fund to host the region’s first Black Philanthropy Month event, where we were inspired by Dr. Copeland’s vision to elevate Blacks in philanthropy and empowered to showcase our journey through the launch of the Giving Black®: Greater Richmond study.
