Description
Trauma-Informed Schools Training: This in-depth training will provide educators, administrators, and staff with an overview of the research behind trauma and trauma-informed schools, and share resilience-building strategies for educators and whole schools to consider. This training will include a mix of didactic content with slides, videos, small and large group discussion, and other reflection activities to allow participants to apply learning to their own school experiences. This training will be led by experts from the NC Resilience & Learning Project out of Public School Forum of North Carolina. The Project was developed through research and recommendations from a study group in NC in 2015, specifically looking at the impact of childhood trauma has on learning and engagement in the school setting. The Project works in partnership with schools and districts to design and implement whole-school and district-wide strategies to improve academic performance and social-emotional well-being of students. As of 2021-2022, they have trained and consulted with over 25 districts across the state. Trauma-Informed School Trainings • Overview of trauma, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and toxic stress • What a trauma-informed school is • Impact of trauma on brain development and how the stress response system works • Impact trauma and stress have on student learning, behavior, and relationships in the school setting • Description of culture, culturally responsive teaching • Importance of cultural responsiveness and trauma-informed education being done together • Defining resilience and discussing trauma-informed strategies in resilience-building for staff and students in: - Staff wellness - self-care and collective care. -Trusting, supportive relationships -Safe, structured environment -Self-regulation skill-building and social-emotional learning Training provided by the Coastal Coalition for Substance Awareness & Prevention (CCSAP), funded by the Drug-Free Communities Support Grant Program.
