Description

Mental health conditions do not discriminate. They affect millions of people no matter the race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Unfortunately, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and other marginalized communities have a difficult time finding access to resources and treatment. In May 2008, the US House of Representatives announced July as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Bebe was an author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate. She strived to destigmatize mental health conditions within the Black community and other marginalized communities. This month is about shining a light on the mental health needs of BIPOC and other marginalized communities that face unique challenges. SAFE is presenting our first movie day! The film we selected is All The Bright Places. Adapted from the Jennifer Niven novel of the same name, Netflix’s All the Bright Places is a YA drama that follows teenagers Theodore Finch (Justice Smith) and Violet Markey (Elle Fanning) as they deal with similar mental health struggles and find love in the process. Often the mental needs of BIPOC are ignored or mistreated. This film shines a light on the reality that mental health conditions do not discriminate. Theodore is a young Black boy. He is fun-loving, kind, and smart. He also happens to deal with mental health struggles. This film is important because representation is one step to destigmatizing mental health conditions for BIPOC. We hope to see you there! Please, note that tickets are limited. One guest per ticket. Trigger Warnings - Suicide, Depression, and Bipolar Disorder The film is PG-13 If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or suicidal ideation, text "HELLO" to the Crisis Text Line (741741) or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255).
