From Behind The Scoreboard, I feature the sports stories that tell us much more than simply who won or lost. These personal and inspiring experiences of grade school, high school, college, other amateur and even pro athletes allow all of us to reflect a little more on what is important in life. ~ James C. Metzger, Chairman and CEO, Whitmore — The Agency _______ A Young Champion Of Concussion Protocols Meredith Greenberg, who is just 19, likely has played her last competitive lacrosse game. She has suffered from numerous concussions but that hasn’t dampened her competitive spirit. She now is committed to helping other athletes navigate the dangerous path associated with head injuries. From Bronxville in Westchester County, Meredith feels that many young athletes and their parents might not possess all the important information about the dangers associated with concussions, potentially jeopardizing critical decisions about proper medical treatment and future playing options. To support them before and if an injury occurs, she founded Athlete Concussion Foundation (AFC), an advocacy organization that educates students and parents about the importance of reporting head injuries to coaches and reducing the risk of permanent brain damage. AFC is focused on prevention through education and the inclusion of mental health resources. Meredith’s long-term goal is to develop an affordable EEG device that is easy to use and quickly can detect concussions in an ambulance and on the sports field. Though Meredith’s competitive sports career has been compromised, she has become a young pioneer, some might say a sports champion, who is seeking solutions to help protect the health of current and future athletes of all ages.
