Description

Note: This program is designed for high school-aged youth. Water is medicine and because we drink it, “we are native water,” shares Rose Hammock, Native leader of Pomo, Wailaki, and Maidu descent. In a time when California is facing unprecedented drought – the worst in 1,200 years! – and water restrictions due to climate change, it is essential to be in a relationship with the sacred life source that hydrates all of the cells in our bodies. Through stories of growing up in Round Valley, Rose will share her connection to rivers of the north, while rooting us in deep reverence for the unceded, ancestral lands and waterways of the Ohlone people that we reside on. After reflecting on our own ancestral relationships to water, Rose will lead us in examining how each of us personally benefits from water, from the microscopic to great cosmic scales of existence. Through storytelling, mindfulness practices, and journaling, we will collectively explore: a deeper appreciation and respect for the power and personhood of water our identities and ancestral ways of connecting to the water around usembodied ways of expanding our relationship with the more-than-human worldAbout the GuideRose Hammock is of Pomo, Wailaki, Maidu, Mexican and Nicaraguan descent and identifies as Indigenous because it encompasses and honors where she is from as well as her ancestors. Building relationships with non-natives and ally-ships leads to trust and more authentic and heartfelt connections. Rose works with many different organizations throughout Sonoma County serving as a cultural resource for these groups and as a school design coach with youth. She teaches her students about traditional plants, languages, ceremony, art and other cultural traditions. "Walking life with an open mind is easy but walking life with an open heart is the hard part,” she says.
