Description
This is a concert to kick off West Marin Fiddle Camp 2022 at Commonweal Gardens in Bolinas, featuring some of the teachers from the camp. This will be an evening of original and traditional music, a beautiful blend of old and new. There will be individual 20 minute sets by each performer. See bios of each performer below. Dirk PowellFB | INST | SPTFY Dirk Powell is a musician with deep roots in several rural American traditions. He learned banjo and fiddle from his Kentucky grandfather, James Clarence Hay, and has been a part of the thriving Cajun/Creole music community in Louisiana since his early 20s. He has toured and recorded with musicians such as Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, Buddy Miller, Jack White, Loretta Lynn, and Levon Helm, while his contribution to film has found him collaborating with directors like Anthony Minghella ("Cold Mountain"), Ang Lee ("Ride with the Devil"), and Spike Lee ("Bamboozled"). His solo records, which often combine a traditional foundation with a wide-ranging commitment to emotion and original expression, have had impact around the globe. He is also in demand as a producer and owns his own studio on the banks of Bayou Teche near Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. His latest recording “When I Wait For You” will be released in 2020. Love, Dean FB | INST | SPTFY Musicians, singer-songwriters, and husband and wife, Rachael and Luke Price, are bringing back the feel-good vibes of classic Americana. On Love, DEAN’s self-titled debut, they’ve handcrafted a musical mosaic from vintage soul, Motown, old-time music, gospel, folk, and neo-soul. The self-titled album is themed around love and community, and coming of age milestones. It’s vibrant, personal, and it’s for everyone. Eli WestFB | INST | SPTFY It’s always illuminating to ask an artist how they understand music, but Eli West’s perspective is nothing short of ground-breaking. A trained designer, he sees music architecturally, visualizing his compositions spatially. It’s a highly unusual way to think about music, tied to his verdant natural world of the Pacific Northwest. On his new album, Tapered Point of Stone, West lays out original songs and tunes like houses built by hand, weaving their melodies into the setting of acoustic roots music that first inspired him. Recorded in 2020, just before everything shut down, the album brings together West’s favored quartet of musicians: Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse) on mandolin and guitar, Christian Sedelmeyer (Jerry Douglas) on fiddle, himself on mandolin, guitar, and banjo, and Clint Mullican (Watchhouse) on bass. This is the third album this quartet has built, including solo albums for Marlin and Sedelmeyer, and at this point they operate on a near-magical wavelength. As both a noted arranger, songwriter, performer, and composer, West has been crafting a Northwest-centric roots music aesthetic through earlier collaborations with Cahalen Morrison and John Reischman, and recordings with Bill Frisell and Dori Freeman. Tapered Point of Stone showcases West’s collaborative nature. Rainy EyesFB | INST | SPTFY Swampy Folk Americana - Rainy Eyes (Irena Eide) is a Norwegian-born Americana singer-songwriter. She has been living in the San Francisco Bay Area for over a decade and just recently re-located to Louisiana. Rainy Eyes has been writing music, performing and touring throughout the US for the past decade. Both solo and with a band, her performances have a spellbinding, inspiring effect and a soulful, heartfelt and timeless sound with tight-knit harmonies, melodious solos, and thoughtful songwriting. ---------------------- Tickets are for Smiley's patio.
