guitar wiring question

So I accidentally wired a bridge pickup wrong and ended up with a crazy sound when mixed with the neck pickup. Thinking DeMarzio, I took a Seymour Duncan humbucker, connected the hot black wire to the white, used red wire as hot. Not phase shift, right? As a stand alone humbucker it was really bright, twangy and weak. But mixed with the neck single coil, really great half-cocked Wah pedal sound. Did I go tapped coil and out of phase??? I really want to make this tone optional but not sure how to wire it. What did I do???
