Description
We will gather to watch the sunset and take turns saying affirmations. An affirmation is a positive statement about yourself. Here are some examples (but you're definitely not limited to these): - I am enough just the way I am. - I feel peaceful today. - I deserve kindness. - People appreciate my insight. - I am good at giving people the benefit of the doubt. - I deserve to get the benefit of the doubt. - I'm making a lot of progress healing. - I deserve to say no and set boundaries. - I deserve to exit relationships that don't feel fair to me. - I have a choice about who to share myself with. - My flaws helped me get through a difficult time in my life. Please bring a towel to sit on, and 1 or more positive things that you want to say about yourself. We take turns saying affirmations until the bright lights come on across the lake (which happens about 15 minutes after sunset). It's OK to join late or leave early. When it's your turn, you can repeat your own affirmation, or repeat someone else's affirmation, or add to someone else's, or make a completely new one. We pass a talking stick to make sure everyone has enough time to think about what they want to say, or pause in the middle of it. It's OK to pause before, during, or after speaking. It's also OK to take your turn silently if you prefer that. Any wording is welcome, but if you aren't sure yet what wording you want to try, we suggest starting with less detailed wording that isn't dependent on your religious beliefs or your specific situation. This can be satisfying in a group format, because it allows other people to imagine saying the same thing about themselves. Sometimes it can be empowering to hear other people borrow your positive thoughts for themselves too. For example, "I am safe" might resonate with a wider variety of people compared to "God keeps me safe." And "People trust me" might resonate with more people compared to "My presentation will go well at work on Monday." However, we won't judge or correct anyone's wording. The most important thing is showing up and thinking positive thoughts about yourself, surrounded by supportive people who agree that you deserve to be positive. And any wording is OK for that.
