Governor Dan McKee signs legislation to allow RI DMV to issue driving permits to the undocumented. Translate undocumented, aka illegal. The Rhode Island General Assembly passed the legislation last week that allows those who have not been able to establish a lawful presence in the U.S. to apply for driving privileges. According to the legislation, an applicant must: • Have filed personal income tax return as an individual or claimed as a dependent. • Present two primary proof of identity documents. • Present two proof of residency documents. • Not be in violation of insurance requirements. The bill’s sponsors Representative Karen Alzate ( Demoncrat ) and Senator Frank Ciccone ( Democrat ) joined McKee at the Thursday event. The DMV will not be issuing these until July 2023. …( Time to stop it ? ) Fact Check: Ask your insurance agent / company if your “uninsured motorist” insurance premium will increase as a result of this action ! Ask your insurance agent how long individuals will actually have / keep insurance once they register a vehicle. The usual answer will be: “ They make one payment to get the policy, then never make another payment. The policy gets cancelled … but does that info ever get to the DMV, and how long does it take ? Furthermore, does the DMV notify the individual that there individual’s registration MAY be cancelled if they cannot provide proof of insurance within … (another ?) 10 - 30 more days on the road ??? https://dmv.ri.gov/adjudications-suspensions/insurance-verification-program Ask yourself ….. how will said vehicles receive a state inspection sticker ? Response … will ride with whatever sticker is on the vehicle until / if stopped …. Then have “ days” to get an inspection and sticker. And from where will that be ?
