Description

For some young children, preschool is not a good fit. After ten years of working with children ages 2-6 in group settings, I've found that there are always some children who need more time to transition to a group, or who are especially sensitive and can use more support before beginning preschool or kindergarten. These children are longing to learn and seeking an engaged curriculum that can meet them where they are growing and help prepare them for their next steps. As an early childhood teacher, I've always been attracted to working with children like this. For the past three years I've worked with families and children to bring a school experience into their homes. What this looks like is a minimum of 4 hours of care 4-5 days a week at a rate of $23-$25 an hour. Here is what one family of a 4 year old child had to say about their experience. "Throughout her tenure with us, we have been impressed with the calm, empathetic and loving manner Ms. Beck has always been able to maintain, while at the same time introducing our child to structure, routine, education and emotional regulation at a pace he could handle. It might go without saying, but for a very young child with severe ADHD, this is no small task. Under Ms. Beck’s guidance, our child's reading, writing and math skills are beyond Kindergarten level. She has fostered his emotional growth, encouraged his art, taught him handcrafting skills like weaving and sewing, created hand-made books with him, and introduced him to so many new games that he loves. In addition to our accolades about her work as a preschool teacher, it is important to note that she has done this all with an eye toward preparing him for entry into Kindergarten. She has worked with him at identifying and processing difficult emotions in a healthy way; she has gradually introduced structure and helped him deal with the big feelings that come with not always getting to choose for himself the activity they will be doing; she continually works with him on the emotional intelligence skills that will be crucial for successful entry into elementary school. Ms. Beck has provided us with critical feedback and regular meetings/updates to let us know about successes and challenges, and the input she has given us has been invaluable in our meetings with his doctors. She has also listened to the advice and guidance that has come from our child's doctors and therapists and worked to incorporate these techniques into her teaching. At the end of the day, our family cannot say enough good things about Ms. Beck."
