***NOTE*** To be considered for this position, please apply at the Skagit County Job Opportunity site: SUMMARY: Utilizes departmental equipment to repair and maintain County roads and drainage systems, bridges, and other systems within an assigned district. - Salary upon hire is $20.52 to $21.98 per hour (step 1 through 3) depending upon qualifications. - Progressive increases are based upon years of service with Skagit County, up to step 8 (top step is $26.12/hr.). The Maintenance Technician II is Range 9 of the AFSCME (Public Works) Union salary schedule. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Typical functions include regular and reoccurring maintenance, installation, and repair work of roads, bridges and stormwater systems. As a member of the Public Works Operations Department, a wide variety of duties include keeping roads clean, plowing snow, and managing stormwater to support road, bridge, and special operations. Examples of duties and responsibilities are shown below. Operates vehicles and equipment used in roadway maintenance, including single axle dump truck, self-propelled broom, roller, chipper truck (driver) and snowplow/sander mounted on a one ton truck. Operates jack hammer, air compressor, gas powered small tools, and all lower-graded equipment as needed. Performs routine preventive maintenance inspections and reports repairs when needed on assigned equipment. Cuts brush, grass and weeds with hand tools. Cuts and saws bushes and tree limbs that pose potential problems to drivers. Drives single axle dump trucks to move gravel, logs, pipes, etc. Drives herbicide truck for application along County roadsides. Performs manual labor which may include digging ditches, tree cleanup, lifting and carrying heavy materials, frequent walking or standing, and working outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Applicants must be able to bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds. Assists in the installation of culverts, guardrail, and the maintenance of bridges. Assists in repairs as needed to the Guemes ferry landings. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner. Provides information within scope of knowledge. Supervisory: none OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs other duties as assigned. Related duties as required are duties that may not be specifically listed in the position description but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's classification of work. Requires the knowledge of: Knowledge of road maintenance operations. Knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures. Requires the ability to: Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the public. Ability to work safely under potentially hazardous road or weather conditions. Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in road maintenance. Licenses and/or Certifications: Valid Washington State Driver's License Ability to obtain Class B CDL endorsement within 6 months. Ability to obtain Washington State Traffic Control Flagger Card within 6 months. Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within 6 months. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Most work is in the field, with exposure to extreme weather conditions, rough terrain. Must have hand-eye coordination to operate equipment, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand, walk, climb, and perform extended periods of physical labor. Hazards: Potential hazards from road conditions, or road machinery and equipment.
