Student achievement in Lyon County and all across Kansas is disappointingly low. Student achievement in Lyon County and all across Kansas is disappointingly low. According to the Kansas Department of Education, 45% of Lyon County 10th-graders are below grade level in Math; 39% are at grade level but still need remedial training, and only 16% are on track for college and career. Achievement unfortunately has been declining over the years in Kansas. But not in Florida. Low-income 4th-graders in Florida have gone from about the worst in the nation in 1998 to the best in the nation now. Florida’s remarkable turnaround is the subject of a short documentary entitled “Giving Kids a Fighting Chance.” Register now for free tickets to the movie, followed by a discussion of how Kansas students can get the same great opportunities.
