Description
All proceeds will go to Mordecai’s US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Coastal Wetlands Restoration Project, a joint project between the Federal government and it’s non-Federal partners, Mordecai Land Trust (MLT) and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The Project, which has been in process for nearly twenty years, will be an off-shore rubble breakwater that will address the severely eroded sections of the northern and western shorelines of the island. If the Project remains on schedule, it is targeted to be completed by 2024, with maintenance dredge and plantings being added between the breakwater and the island at a later date. USACE is expected to follow the NJDEP 1977 Tidelines Line when constructing the breakwater. The breakwater will begin on the northeastern tip of the island, wrap around to the western side and extend south. It will end north of where the MLT has placed wave attenuation devices (WADs) and Oyster Castles, both MLT living shoreline projects. USACE, our Federal partner, is responsible for 75 percent of the cost of the Project, while MLT and NJDEP, the two non-Federal partners, are responsible for 25 percent. MLT’s cost share is estimated to be up to $500,000, 25 percent of the NJDEP share. The Federal costs stand tentatively as high as approximately $8 million. USACE will be responsible for monitoring and repair of the Project for five years after completion. After that, the responsibility of any maintenance costs will shift to MLT. The Project is anticipated to protect the island from further erosion, increase land mass, and benefit island habitat. It is expected to move into the planning and design phase by the end of the year. The Margaritaville Party, hosted by MLT, is our 2022 major fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the Army Corps Project. The event is Saturday, July 16th, from 5 to 9 PM. Tickets are $75 per person for full bar and a specialty drink, Caribbean menu, auction, and live music. Tickets are on sale through event bright or in person at Wyndecrest Home, 110 North Bay Avenue, Beach Haven; at LEHYC, 401 Berkeley Avenue, Beach Haven; or by check to Mordecai Land Trust, PO Box 1414, Beach Haven, NJ 08008.
